The Rights of Individuals with Developemental Disabilites

Big Lakes Developmental Center, Inc. is dedicated to advocating and protecting the rights of all individuals. You should remember that each person is guaranteed the same rights afforded every citizen of Kansas. Some, but not all, of these rights specifically mentioned in Kansas law are summarized here:
    • Freedom from abuse, neglect or exploitation;
    • Having control over personal finances;
    • Receiving, purchasing and using personal property;
    • Participating in meaningful decision-making;
    • Right to privacy;
    • Freedom to practice the religion or faith of your choice;
    • Freedom from excessive medication or restrictive procedures without consent;
    • Being paid for work; and,
    • Being treated with dignity and respect.
Right of Appeal and Dispute Resolution
You have the right to appeal any decision made by your individual service provider or by Big Lakes Developmental Center. The process normally begins by contacting Big Lakes as we are your area Community Developmental Disabilities Organization (CDDO).
