Family Support Services

Family Support
This cash payment allows the family additional income to meet the costs that are sometimes incurred when a child has been determined mentally retarded or developmentally disabled. It may also help alleviate stress and prevent crisis for families with a child or an adult with developmental disabilities living at home. Payments can be made to families or vendors for a specific item or a temporary supportive service. Although Family Support is primarily aimed toward families with a child age 17 or younger, requests for adults may also be honored in certain circumstances. Contact Big Lakes for program details and eligibility guidelines.

Health and Wellness Services

Big Lakes has a registered nurse and licensed practical nurse on-site during regular business hours to provide health care and medical intervention on an ongoing basis. They are available to both clients and staff for emergency situations such as diabetic reactions, seizures, lacerations, etc. Our nursing staff is involved with medication management and maintaining dietary needs. They also provide nursing services in our Community Living Program. In addition, they furnish valuable health education classes on Universal Precautions, maintain medical records and client medical histories and administer medications and inoculations, including the Hepatitis B inoculation for both clients and staff.

Respite Care

Periodically, those providing care to another individual will seek out respite care services to free themselves from the constant demands of caregiving for a brief period of time. Big Lakes provides respite care for adults (age 16 and over) who live with parents or other caregivers. We also provide respite services for children through our affiliation with Twin Valley Developmental Services.

Referral Services

If it is determined that your situation calls for a service which Big Lakes does not provide, our staff can assist with referring you to alternate resources available in your community. Further, if you need assistance with locating services in another community, our staff can help.

Transportation

Transportation is provided to adult clients, as well as the general public, on a modified fixed route system at a nominal charge. Service hours are 5:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. available Monday through Friday in our 4-county area.
